Description
English: Tlingit totem pole from Village Island (Memorial Pole). This is the lower portion of the pole. From top to bottom, the pole included a bear (not visible here), an owl (partially visible here), and the two figures mainly visible here, which are believed to be the bear's half-human children.


Acquisition number 87.2.50.25, Totem Heritage Center, Ketchikan, Alaska, U.S. The Center provides a climate-controlled environment for display of some of the last 19th-century totem poles in Alaska, mainly Haida and Tlingit. If I understand correctly, the poles continue to be owned by their respective tribes and clans, and are considered to be on long-term loan for display at the museum.
