Español: Salto Ángel - Kerepakupai-merú
El salto Ángel es la catarata más alta del mundo, con una altura de 979 m (807 m de caída ininterrumpida), generada por la caída del río Churún desde el Auyantepuy. Está ubicado en el Parque Nacional Canaima en el estado Bolívar, Venezuela, que fue instaurado el 12 de junio de 1962 y declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1994. El parque nacional se extiende sobre 30.000 km² (más grande que Bélgica), hasta la frontera con Guyana y Brasil, y por su tamaño es considerado el más grande del mundo. Este salto era conocido por los indios de la zona, quienes lo llamaron Kerepakupai-merú («caída de agua hasta el sitio más profundo») en idioma pemón, pero su «descubrimiento» oficial sigue siendo materia de discusión. Algunos historiadores se lo atribuyen a Ernesto Sánchez, explorador que en 1910 notificó el hallazgo al Ministerio de Minas e Hidrocarburos en Caracas. Otros al capitán de la Armada venezolana Félix Cardona Puig, quien en 1927, junto a Mundó Freixas, divisó el gran salto de agua en el macizo del Auyantepuy. Los artículos y mapas de Cardona atrajeron la curiosidad y el espíritu de aventura del aviador estadounidense Jimmy Angel, quien se puso en contacto con Cardona para hacer varias visitas al salto en 1937. El 21 de mayo de 1937, Cardona acompañó a Jimmy Angel a sobrevolar el salto. En septiembre de ese mismo año Jimmy Angel insiste en aterrizar en la cima del Auyantepuy, propósito que logra abruptamente, incrustando la avioneta en el suelo. Las noticias del accidente, que afortunadamente no dejó víctimas, motivaron que el gran salto fuese bautizado como salto Ángel, y así se le conoce desde entonces. El salto Ángel también es conocido erróneamente como Churún-merú, puesto que ese nombre corresponde a otro salto de unos 400 metros de altura ubicado al final del cañón del Diablo, que ocupa el cuarto puesto a nivel mundial. En Canaima, Santa Elena de Uairén y Ciudad Bolívar hay operadores turísticos que realizan excursiones por tierra, agua y aire (en avioneta o helicóptero) para divisar el Auyantepuy y sus numerosos saltos de agua. Las excursiones por tierra y agua se realizan desde el campamento Canaima y duran unas 13 horas.
