Title
Kent-8EE8F8 Medieval seal matrix Front view
Description
English: Lead seal matrix of pointed-oval shape. The central motif is a fleur-de-lis within an oval or drop-shaped groove. The inscription around is in Lombardic lettering. On the reverse is an unpierced lug at the 12 o’clock position, and also three concentric moulded ridges or borders around a central slightly raised area. Corroded and with some edges apparently missing. 13th century. The inscription was originally read as 'S. WALT(F/R)IL ODOC' i.e. seal of Walter son of Odoc. It seems perhaps more likely that it reads S’:WALTERI COX DE (Seal of Walter Cox of…) with the E and R ligatured. Although the first name is well engraved, the surname is very poor and hard to read. The initial mark may be a fleur-de-lis.
