Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Illustration of 6 craft (out of a total of 9) seen from a distance of c.23 miles by Kenneth Arnold on 24 June 1947. The 9 craft flew at an altitude of 9,500-10,000 ft while transiting the c.47 mile distance between Mt Rainier and Mt Adams in southern Washington state, USA, in only 1 min. 42 s.
They are depicted here travelling from left to right, and are based on Arnold's notes and a sketch in terms of shape ("somewhat bat-shaped", or "half-moon shaped, oval in front and a convex [tapered triangle] on the rear"), colour ("mirror bright") and dimensions ("longer [in the direction of travelling] than wide"). Their shapes were "observed quite plainly" in black silhouette against snow, presenting a very attenuated cross-section when seen edge on. The craft depicted above were traced accurately from Arnold's sketch before being rotated, but do not accurately reflect the "very, very thin" (cf. Clyde Homan) or "1:20" thickness to length ratio.
The craft travelled in a chain like a "flock of geese", diagonally stepped-down over a 5 mile distance, moving as if connected, while weaving from side to side like the tail of a Chinese kite. When banking their mirror-like surfaces caused bright flashes of light off their "big flat disk[s]".
Starting August 1947, after viewing the photos by William Rhodes, Arnold revealed that a very different craft (not illustrated above) was travelling second from last (or 8th) in the train of objects. It was either "smaller" or "larger" than the rest, and "a very wraith-like looking thing [that] wasn’t round at all." It was also "darker" than the rest, which perhaps accounts for it presenting a "clearer" shape. cf.
