To dogs with good sound teeth they might be givenwhole occasionally, but not invariably, nor to very youngor old dogs, for their teeth would likely break or be other-wise injured. It should be the custom to crush them; and if one hasnot a machine for the purpose, a good method is to puta few into a strong bag and pound them with a mallet orhammer. Thus broken up well, they may be used tothicken milk, broths, or soups, or mixed with meat.

Having taken a general survey of the range of mate-rials at the command of man for the purpose of feedinghis dogs, it is well to return and, starting as it were witha litter of puppies about leaving their mother, apply theprinciples laid down in the foregoing chapters. The period of weaning fixed by breeders is between thefourth and fifth weeks ; and this seems in accord with theplans of Nature, for the milk secretion is then as a rulefalling off, both in quality and quantity, and most mothersgive their young other food if their caretakers fail todo so. Closely observe the average mother that is denied assist-ance in nourishing her little ones after her milk has begunto fail and she will soon be detected in providing for themfrom her own feeding-pan, conveying the same in herstomach and regurgitating or vomiting it up before them.And when the puppies are so situated that several experi-enced mothers have access to them, if their own fails to dothis the
