| Description | Kendall County Courthouse (1887). The current courthouse replaced a 1864 that was destroyed in a 1887 fire. Yorkville was chosen as the county seat because of its central location. The county seat was moved to Oswego in 1845, but amid allegations that the vote was fradulent, the seat moved back to Yorkville in 1864. This building served as county courthouse until a new building opened in 1998. Kendall County was founded in 1841 when it split from LaSalle and Kane Counties. It was originally going to be named Orange County, after the New York county where many residents originated from, but was instead named after Postmaster General Amos Kendall. |
