Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Kempton Park Pumping station - No. 6 pumping engine. A 62' high monster built in 1929 by Worthington-Simpson of Newark. In the bottom foreground is engine No. 8 - a Fraser & Chalmers steam turbine installed in 1933. The house did have room for a third monstrous triple but turbines were chosen instead. I saw this site running more than once and I can assure you I never saw as many attendants as are present on No. 6. If it wasn't for the presence of people it would be really difficult to comprehend the size of this building and its contents. Hampton Waterworks was very nearly modernised with two reciprocating engines 50% more powerful than the Kempton engines and with exhaust turbines driving pumps and generators. In the event it was modernised with steam turbine driven pumps and generators that ran until 1983 or thereabouts.
