Health enthusiast W.K. Kellogg began producing his famous “Kellogg’s Corn Flakes” in 1906. After that, ready-to-eat cereals transformed the breakfast meal for children as well as adults. During the 1920s, FDA developed methodology to determine the bran content of cereals in order to take action against “exaggerated and false claims.” By 1929, this 1926 ad for Kellogg’s PEP cereal, describing it as a “laxative bran food” and claiming that bran “helps keep off constipation” would have made it a target for misbranding charges.
