Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 118 Built in 1944 with the US military serial 42-13610. The XO-60 was a military production variant of the Kellett KD-1 autogyro, which had first flown in 1934 and was America’s first practical rotorcraft. This was the last of the seven XO-60s built and is the only surviving example. It was flown for testing at Wright Field in Ohio and Bowman Field in Kentucky, but was damaged in a landing accident in October 1944. It was repaired but not flown and was instead stored for museum use. Officially transferred to the Smithsonian Institute in 1960, it was restored in 1975 and is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
