Kaunos Theatre

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Condensed from a notice on the site: The theatre in Kaunos had a 5000 spectators capacity, it complies with Anatolian tradition and follows Hellenistic tradition regarding its plan. The theatron has a diameter of 75 meters and an inclination of 27 degrees, it is supported by the Analemna, which rises up to 15 meters in places free of the slope. The analemnna is separated from the stage building (Skene) by open entrances at two sides (Parados). The theatron is divided into 9 wedge-shaped kerkis by 8 stairways.

The skene is located in the southeast, its remains suggest it had 2 storeys. Complying with Hellenistic tradition it does not reach the topmost level of the Cavea. The proskenion with a height of 2,40 meters, has been rebuilt 5 times between the 4th century BC and the 3rd AD. A turning stage system, Perioktos, was added in front of the proskenion in the 3rd century AD. Descriptions of such a system can be found in literary sources, in Kaunos there are physical remains.
