Description
English: The Katzensteine are a surprisingly beautiful rock formation in the Veybach valley between Mechernich and Satzvey, near the village of Katzvey. The place was used as refuge during the Paleolithic age: the site was preserved thanks to the eruption 13.000 years ago of the Laacher See (Laach Lake) volcano, as aches buried stones and archaeological remains. Traces of a small Roman quarry were also discovered the site. Stones were probably needed for a nearby Villa Rustica; a small temple of Diana also used these sandstones. Traces of Roman quarrying on the top of the western rock were reburied in 1976 for preservation purposes.
