Summary

Description

Notes: the view is prior to 1925 when James' Building was constructed on the far side corner, then occupied by Bartlett's Tours. Next door in Bathurst Rd is Greenwell & Thomas Chemist and in Katoomba St is McGregor's Tobacconist & Hairdresser next to the City Bank building. Further down Katoomba St on the other side of The Carrington lawn is a building with a roof under construction.

On the corner in front is The Central Tourist Bureau and their garage to service tour cars, with Melvin Auctioneer & Estate Agent, above is S.L. Jackson Dentist, down the slope of Gang-Gang St is McGrath and Niddrie Plumbers & Hot Water Fitters. The sign on the roof reads 'The Popular' Chocolates Made Here.

Marx & Co. Estate Agents billboard on the subway. The street to the right in front of the subway entry is Bent St, named in 1891; renamed Goldsmith Place at the time of the highway bypass in 1985. It was a dirt track when George Goldsmith (`1881-1958) established his hardware business there in 1909.

The level crossing was first mentioned in 1871, when Katoomba was known as Crushers Quarry, the first rail gates were installed around 1876. These were single, hand operated gates, which would resemble what we see here. There appears to be a gate-keeper's cottage on this side of the line and a smaller sentry box on the far side. A busy crossing such as this may have needed two gate-keepers to open and close the gates simultaneously.

Date Range: a date range of 1922-24 was suggested by the donor, however according to one source, the pedestrian subway steps in Bathurst Rd were roofed in 1920 and appear to be open here. But see comment below on The Queen of Sheba, released 1921.
