Hegave a long chuckle and then his headsank forward; soon a soft snore showedthat he had relapsed into slumber. We passed on to the next cage, wherethe great American Bald Eagle, withregal dignity, sat on his high perch. Icould almost see a pennant with EPluribus UnunT under him. He lookeddown very sternly, like a monarch-asindeed he truly is-and instinctively Isaluted him as I would the Americanflag, for he seemed just as much repre-sentative of the nation. I wish you wouldnt glare so, saidKatie nervously. One must preserve ones dignity,said the eagle mildly, especially whenone is the emblem of the greatest coun-try on earth.
