Summary
[edit]DescriptionKasada Yadnya Ceremony.jpg |
English: The Yadnya Kasada ceremony starts from the legend of the sacrifice of the children of the ancestors of the Tengger tribe. It has a deep meaning as gratitude to God and protecting nature. The Tengger people have held Yadnya Kasada since their presence in Tengger during the Majapahit Kingdom around the 13th century AD. Legend says Tengger comes from a combination of the names of their two ancestors: Rara Anteng (Teng), daughter of King Brawijaya, and Joko Seger (Ger), the son of a Kediri Brahmin. The two of them married and lived around the Penanjakan area, not far from Mount Bromo. But they were childless for a long time. Until finally they prayed to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa.
Rara Anteng and Joko Seger promised that if they had children, one of their children would be sacrificed. Not long after, Rara Anteng became pregnant and gave birth. They had 25 children. After their birth, one of their children, Raden Kusuma, disappeared. They then heard Raden Kusuma's voice coming out of the crater of Mount Bromo. The descendants of Rara Anteng and Joko Seger or the Tengger people can live in peace if at certain times they will make sacrifices to the crater of Mount Bromo. The meaning of "giving sacrifices" is donating part of the crops and livestock to the Bromo crater. This is the origin of the Kasada ceremony. This version of the legend is not much different from the historical version. According to a number of inscriptions around the Bromo and Negarakertagama mountains, the Tengger people are also said to have lived in the Tengger area since the Majapahit era. the Tengger people live as tough farmers. The nature around the cold mountains forges them to work all day long to keep their bodies warm. The crops are abundant and their needs are fulfilled by the nature around them. That's why they respect nature and try to maintain a harmonious relationship with it.
