Summary
[edit]DescriptionKarditsa Thinker.JPG |
English: Clay male figurine, known as the "Thinker". Late Neolithic (4500-3300 BC). The label reads: "The Thinker". National Archaeological Museum, (Link to this piece (Inv. 5894) in the NAMA Website). Large solid figurine of a seated man from the district of Karditsa, Thesaly. It is unique, the largest Neolithic work to date, verging on full sculpture. It is clumsy, in detail, but the individual elements make up the figure of a robust man with direct gaze and manly bearing at a moment of action. The pronounced ithyphallic feature - for the most part broken - together with the size of the figurine point to its cultic character. It may well have represented an agrarian deity associated with the fertility of the earth. |
