Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Located at Meyer Circle on Ward Parkway. This memorial to the 421 Kansas City residents who were killed in World War I was dedicated on November 11, 1930 by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It includes the names of every person killed, including the first Army officer, Dr. (Lt.) William Fitzsimmons, who died when his hospital was bombed by German aircraft on Base Hospital No. 5 near Dannes-Camiers in Pas-de-Calais, France. In 1920, Army Hospital 21 in Aurora, Colorado was officially renamed the Fitzsimons Army Hospital in his honor. Loretto Hollenback, the only woman on the memorial, was a nurse. Private Wayne Minor, who was killed on November 11, 1918, an African-American, was one of the last Americans killed in action. A VFW Post in Kansas City carries his name. Originally an elm tree was planted along the mall of Ward Parkway from Meyer Blvd. south to 75th Street, but these were all lost with the Dutch Elm Disease of 1963.
