| Description |
Gerestaureerde originele door gevangenen gemaakte muurschildering (1944). De Nederlandse vlag bij de hoofdingang is na de bevrijding aangebracht ter vervanging van de Duitse vlag op het origineel. In de vroege zomer van 1941 besloot de Duitse bezetter barakken van het Nederlandse leger vlak bij Amersfoort en Leusden als kamp in te richten. In het 'Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort', zoals het kamp officieel bekend stond, werden in totaal ruim 35.000 vooral mannelijke gevangenen opgesloten. Ongeveer 20.000 van hen zijn in Duitsland te werk gesteld of naar andere kampen getransporteerd, circa 15.000 zijn vrijgelaten, ontvlucht (heel weinig), geëxecuteerd of als gevolg van ontbering gestorven. De gevangen moesten werken in Arbeitskommandos, die waren verdeeld in binnen- en buitenploegen. De meesten verrichtten eenvoudige, maar zware handarbeid in de buurt van Amersfoort en keerden 's avonds terug in het kamp. |
