Description

Deze 'gang' naar de executieplaats is door (voornamelijk Joodse) gevangenen met de hand uitgegraven. Aan het einde van de gang staat nu 'De Stenen Man'.

In de vroege zomer van 1941 besloot de Duitse bezetter barakken van het Nederlandse leger vlak bij Amersfoort en Leusden als kamp in te richten. In het 'Polizeiliches Durchgangslager Amersfoort', zoals het kamp officieel bekend stond, werden in totaal ruim 35.000 vooral mannelijke gevangenen opgesloten. Ongeveer 20.000 van hen zijn in Duitsland te werk gesteld of naar andere kampen getransporteerd, circa 15.000 zijn vrijgelaten, ontvlucht (heel weinig), geëxecuteerd of als gevolg van ontbering gestorven. De gevangen moesten werken in Arbeitskommandos, die waren verdeeld in binnen- en buitenploegen. De meesten verrichtten eenvoudige, maar zware handarbeid in de buurt van Amersfoort en keerden 's avonds terug in het kamp.
