Description

A painting of Kali attacking a demon, made about 1740 AD in Pahari, India. On display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

Four-armed, black-skinned Kali is a Hindu goddess who is the destroyer of evil, and the Mother of the Universe. She bestows liberation (from evil, from temptation, from fear, from whatever ails you) and is the first of the 10 manifestations of the Great Goddess (or ultimate reality).

Here, Kali has already slayed two minor demons and the horses pulling the chariot of a large, green demon. Demon blood could generate another demon if it struck the ground. So here, Kali extends her tongue to ensure that no demon blood can strike the earth.
