Description

The old tower was on a hillside back of Rogers and Orton dorms in Pullman. On a Sunday Drive, we discovered this "new" tower around my freshman year in high school. "Better soil conductivity for twice the range of the old transmitter site," said an engineer who gave us an impromptu tour.

It seemed like an eternity before the new transmitter came into use however. I could tell that the signal was still coming from the old site by which way I pointed the back of my radio.

Eventually my sister got tired of me talking about the new tower and wondering when it would go on line. She said, "I should just write them a letter and ask why aren't you using your STUPID new tower."

I didn't follow her advise, and it wasn't long before the new tower came into use.

Now, nearly 40 years later there's a new transmitter. Digital.

Also, since those days, KWSU has grown to become the Northwest Public Radio network of stations and repeaters. Most of the network is on FM. We even have a branch of NWPR here in Bellingham.
