THE gig of the Reunion Tour. After being a fan during the very lean early-mid 80s, I felt some vindication when Kiss came back from the dead and the tour practically sold out the day it was put on sale. Alice in Chains opened. The KISS fans booed them non-stop, and it only got worse when they jokingly sang "Beth" on stage. On top of that, Layne Staley was a shell of his former self. There was no aggression, no energy, no personality. He simply clung to the mic stand. Layne would only perform three more shows before they pulled out of the tour. It also marked his last performances ever. The show was magical. It's hard to describe the feeling I got when they took the stage..although after I got a bootleg of the show, I realized how sloppy it really was. But for those 2+ hours, it was an experience I'll never forget. The band and their legacy would have been much better served had they called it a day after the '96-'97 tour. The greatest thing was that once the lights went down for the intro, the already palpable energy in the crowd hit a new level. The seats started flying, and there was a mad rush towards the stage. Despite already being fairly close, we managed to 'upgrade' to 2nd row. Random note: Billy Corgan was among the only 'celebs' down on the floor in the middle of the crowd. The rest watched from skyboxes. |
