Title |
KENT4425: Early Medieval Small Long Brooch, Incomplete |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon artefact. It has been suggested that this is part of a footplate for a small long brooch, however there is no evidence of a catchplate on the reverse. The fragment is almost trefoil in shape, and is decorated with ring and dot punchmarks, one in each of the two lower lobes and the third positioned between them but slightly further. The top lobe has a worn break across half its width and partial circular hole remains. The unbroken edge continues around in a smooth curve until it reaches the break. If a bow was attached to the artefact, it would have been positioned at this point. However, based on the cast edge of the artefact and the extent of the break, the bow would have to of been 4mm or less in width, making the interpretation of the object as a footplate unlikely, especially when compined with the lack of evidence for a pin attachment. In fact, the reverse of this object is completely plain, with no fittings or decoration. This object was originally recorded as a strap end, this could explain the possible round hole in the top lobe, as it could have held a rivet used to attach the artefact to a leather strap or belt. The artefact has a dull green patina, and there is some pitting on the surface revealing a lighter yellow-green colour. The artefact is 23mm long and 21mm wide. The thickness and weight remains unknown. The patina of the artefact and the decoration used dates it to the early Anglo-Saxon period, up to the mid 6th century. |
