Title
KENT-D4D178: Early Medieval Anglo-Saxon Vessel Sherd
Description
English: Pottery sherd, probably from a vessel of Anglo-Saxon date. The sherd has a red-brown buff surface, while the body is grey with white crushed shell inclusions. The sherd is a rim fragment with worn breaks on three edges. The sherd is rectangular in shape, with a slight convex curve on the outside edge, see drawing (sherd number 3). The rim appears to be folded over, giving an oval section. There is no decoration on the sherd. The sherd measures 33mm by 32mm at the widest points. As the find has been identified from a photograph, the thickness of the rim is unknown. Found with nine other sherds, four of which are believed to be from the same vessel; see records KENT-D4A887, KENT-D4C866, KENT-D4D682 and KENT-D4DBE5. The relation of these sherds to each other can be seen on the attached drawing.
