Title |
KENT-952E06. Medieval copper alloy ring brooch. |
||
Description |
English: Medieval cast copper alloy annular brooch. The brooch is comprised of two figures, one of a man and the other being a dragon or serpant. The man holds the monster's neck with his left hand and grasps its tail with his right hand and the body of the monster is curved. The copper alloy pin is looped around the extended left arm of the man. Most of the detail of the figures is worn, although thte man appears to be wearing a tunic. It is possible that the serpent was decorated with scales, as it has a slightly rougher surface than the rest of the brooch. The reverse of the brooch is undecorated, apart from a groove defining the mans head and body.
A parallel to the brooch is HAMP1266, published by Sally Worrell in Hampshire Studies 2002. A similar example in silver was found at Bennington, Herts (Alexander & Binski 1987, 483 no. 641). Motifs depicting men slaying dragons and other monsters are likely to represent the power of good over evil. |
