Title
KENT-7D2EC5
Description
English: An incomplete Early Medieval silver strap-end of Thomas (2003) Class A type 1 (Trewhiddle style). The strap end has a deeply split end shaped at the top around two circular rivet holes, with a small third lobe between; the third lobe has three engraved lines forming a small rectangle below. Below and between the rivet holes is an engraved 'fan-shaped' or 'trilobate' motif, which consists actually of four leaves forming a pelta shape; the outer leaves each have a double nick.

The long edges are convex and beaded, and within these is an undecorated border which also curves around the trilobate motif. In the centre are two decorative panels, separated by a central division which may be the stem of a plant. To either side is a relief Trewhiddle-style animal made up of engraved lines, with the open mouth (with triangular tongue) towards the terminal and an intricately interlaced body above. There are no limbs or other details visible, but there is a small area of niello inlay on the right-hand animal, and it seems likely that all of the engraved lines would originally have been inlaid with niello. The central plant stem branches below the animals' heads and there is a fleshy leaf to either side; the stem then continues, and there may be a further animal to either side, but the rest of the strap-end, including the terminal, is missing. The break is old but not worn, and the metal has bent before breaking. The reverse is undecorated but has some small scratches.

The strap-end is 32.0mm long, 15.3mm wide, 1.5mm thick and weighs 6.27g. It is dated by its use of the Trewhiddle style broadly to the 9th century AD. Compare BH-A88603 (2011 T57) and KENT-A58993 (2005 T398).
