Title
KENT-227468. Book clasp. Drawn by D. Williams.
Description
English: Copper alloy book clasp. The clasp consists of two main pieces; a D-shaped plate with a domed upper and flat underside, and a rectangular plate formed from a folded strip of metal. The D-shaped plate has a pair of perforated lugs projecting from its straight edge. A copper alloy bar passes through these lugs and the closed end of the folded rectangular plate. A decorative perforated lug projects from the apex of the D-shaped plate, whilst the open end of the rectangular plate is secured by a copper alloy rivet at each corner. A section of the leather strap that this plate would have been rivetted to survives inbetween the two halves of the plate. The upper surface of the D-shaped plate is decorated with a number of small circular punchmarks, whilst there is some incised linear decoration along the upper sides of the rectangular plate. Overall the clasp measures 59.29mm by 20.36mm. It is 7.40mm thick at its widest point. It weighs 16.68g. Book clasps of this type date to the late 14th or early 15th century AD.
