Title
English: K’wishәn - To toast
Description
English:

Image of an iron bread holder in the Fort Vancouver kitchen, accompanied by the Chinuk Wawa word "k’wishәn" and its translation.

"K’wishәn” is the Chinuk Wawa word fo “to toast food over coals or flame.” To pronounce k’wishәn, start with a click sound in the back of your throat, as when you pronounce the “ck” sound in the English word “sock.” Pronounce the rest of the word as “k’WISH-un.” This strange-looking tool can be found in the fort’s kitchen. In the early 19th century, wrought iron toasters like these were used to make toasted sliced bread or, as it’s called in Chinuk Wawa, k’wishәn-saplel. Saplel is the Chinuk Wawa word for bread.
