Summary
[edit]DescriptionKākā parrot nestling with cross-bill from metabolic bone disease.jpg |
English: Kākā (Nestor meridionalis septentrionalis) parrot nestling with cross-bill from metabolic bone disease. Photo taken in Zealandia EcoSanctuary, Wellington, New Zealand. The nestling is in an artificial wooden nestbox. It's sibling can be seen behind it. Metabolic bone disease in kākā can occur from the chicks receiving food too high in calcium, typically from nuts fed to the parents (which is then regurgitated to the chicks) by well-meaning people who feed the kākā parents when the wild parents visit urban and suburban gardens. |
