Deutsch: Monsunwind mit Seesalz aus dem Süden, Saharawind mit Staub aus dem Norden, Holzkohlefeuer und verbrannter Müll aus den Städten und Kraftwerken, Schiffsverkehr, Ölplattformen und veraltete Motoren – die Luft in der Küstenregion Westafrikas vermengt sich zu einem einzigartigen Gemisch aus verschiedensten Spurengasen, Flüssigkeiten und Teilchen. Gleichzeitig bilden sich regelmäßig in der Atmosphäre zum Teil mehrschichtige Wolkendecken, die großen Einfluss auf das lokale Wetter und Klima haben. Wie sich die Luftpartikel aber genau zusammensetzen und welchen Einfluss sie auf das Entstehen und Verschwinden von Wolkenformationen haben, ist bislang unzureichend erforscht und nicht in aktuelle Klimamodelle integriert.
Wissenschaftler des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) untersuchten deshalb mit dem Forschungsflugzeug Falcon die tropische Luft der westafrikanischen Küste auf ihre Zusammensetzung und wie sich diese auf die klimarelevanten Wolkeneigenschaften auswirken. Die Messflüge waren Teil des fünf Jahre dauernden EU-Projekts DACCIWA (Dynamics-aerosol-chemistry-cloud interactions in West Africa).
