Rückseite: QVI / OCCVLTA / NATVR ANIMANTIVM / INDEFESSO STVDIO / SCRVTATVS / DOCTRINAE COPIA / PLVRIMVS PROFVIT / DECESS BEROL / D 29 NOV / 1832. Aufschrift in zehn Zeilen, unten ein Totenschädel, aus dem links und rechts Zweige mit Blüten wachsen. Oben zwischen links und rechts jeweils fünf Sternen ein Schmetterling. Kommentar: Die aus dem Totenschädel herauswachsenden Zweige und der Schmetterling symbolisieren die Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Gleichzeitig gibt die Schmetterlingsdarstellung Auskunft über die Neigungen Rudolphis als Entomologe. Rudolphi, aus Schweden stammend, Anatom, Physiologe, Botaniker und Zoologe, war Professor an der Berliner Universität und erster Direktor des anatomischen-zootomischen Instituts, dem Vorläufer des Museums für Naturkunde und von 1824-1825 Rektor der Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität. Für das Berliner Münzkabinett ist er von besonderer Bedeutung, legte er doch eine bedeutende Sammlung von Medaillen mit den Porträts von Ärzten, Naturforschern, anderen Gelehrten und Privatpersonen an. Diese Sammlung, die über 9000 Objekte umfasste, wurde nach seinem Tode von den Erben im Jahre 1834 für das Berliner Münzkabinett durch den König angekauft. In der Berliner Sammlung befindet sich ein weiteres Exemplar dieser Medaille in Bronze. Literatur: E.
