Description Built to house the Relics of the Magi, work on Köln cathedral began around 1248. The Gothic choir was consecrated in 1322 and work continued up to 1530, with two aisles of the nave being completed and two storeys of the Southern tower. A lack of funds and interest in the building halted the work until 1842 when renewed interest and funds from the Prussian court enabled the building to restart. The cathedral was completed in 1880 and now has the largest church facade in the world.
