Description |
English: Portrait of Catherine de' Medici (1593-1629), wife of Ferdinando Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua (1587-1626). "Bust-length portrait of Catherine de' Medici, Duchess of Mantua and daughter of Ferdinando I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Dressed in brocade, the Duchess wears an opulent pearl ensemble with a fine lace Medici collar around her neck. She gazes back at the viewer with a dignified, bland expression. Restored but can easily be improved by cleaning. In a contemporary ebonised and gilt wooden frame with an undulating stucco border and painted ornamental elements. The frame with minor worm damage, small to medium-sized knocks and flaws. Size of the picture 55 x 41 cm, framed 73.5 x 62 cm. Justus Sustermans (1597 - 1681) was a Flemish Baroque painter. As court painter to the Medici, he became one of the most respected artists of his time. He achieved particular fame for his Medici portraits, although his oeuvre also features many equally important contemporaries. Condition: II -" [1] |
