Summary

[edit]
Description
English: A three-color image from Hubble representing Jupiter on 2017-01-11 at 20:25:35 UTC. Sulfuric, yellow Io hovers on front of the giant, and Ganymede's large, blurry shadow presents itself at a northern latitude, moon itself unseen off frame some distance to the left. Io finished eclipsing the Sun around 20 minutes ago, so its shadow left Jupiter and resumed being cast unseen into empty space.

Near the limb at middle latitudes, a blueish haze is visible. I very nearly edited this out because I thought it didn't look quite right, but I realized that I was working too hard to eliminate something that was evidently a natural feature of the planet. I think it may be emphasized by the filter choice being very nearly or partially near-UV wavelengths, but in the end decided it would be wrong to remove it, even though it seems that others apparently chose to do so using similar data.

These data were recently released from their proprietary period—about nine days ago. They were originally intended to provide some contextual information in conjunction with the Juno mission. See the following proposal ID: Context Maps of Jupiter during Juno's MWR Orbits

Contrast and sharpening enhancements were made. I scaled the image to 200% its original size before uploading it to my Flickr gallery.
