These were simply made, ser-viceable little sheds, constructed of the always athand bamboo and attap leaves in no longer timethan it takes to pitch a tent. Here was the oneoccasion when the mud seemed a blessing, for itproved a yielding, yet firm setting for the foursticks which served as corner posts and the twolonger ones placed at each end to support a ridgepole. Smaller bamboo and, as often as not, rattan,placed at the sides, and bent and secured acrossthe ridge pole, completed the frame, over whichwere stretched the large and useful leaves of theattap palm. Inside, again, corner posts with slatsof bamboo laid lengthways made very comfortablebeds; and, with crossway slats, stout benches forour provisions and general camp impedimenta:for, of course it was necessary to raise everythingdamageable above the mud.
