Description

Research Farm Location: 3714 Western Avenue Brookings, SD 57006-9421

Please join us for the 21st Annual Field Day at the Eastern South Dakota Soil and Water Research Farm at Brookings, SD. The field day will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2015. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with a walking tour at 10:00, followed by a complimentary noon meal where discussions begun during the tour will continue as table talks.

This year’s theme is Measuring Success: Beyond Another Bushel and the format will be a guided walking tour with four stops addressing: soil health, ecosystems, pollinator health, and herbicide resistance management. USDA-ARS Scientists will guide the groups to each stop, discussing along the way applicable USDA research.

You’ve probably seen Bryan Jorgensen in the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council’s This is Farming television ad where he speaks about soil health and how they’re building the soil on their diverse, multi-generational, family-owned farm. Bryan is participating in this year’s Field Day and will be speaking with Dr. Mike Lehman (ARS) about the Value of Soil Health and Increasing Biology.

Jesse Hall is an Extension Research Assistant and Research Technician at South Dakota State University. He has worked in agricultural research since 1998 and has conducted yield trials and experiments for Crop Performance Testing, the Soybean Breeding Program, and the Sustainable Cropping Systems Program. Jesse also farms with his family in the Bruce/Arlington area. He will speak with Dr. Shannon Osborne (ARS) on Developing Resilient Crop Production Systems.

Since 1957, Adee Honey Farms, Bruce SD, has been producing quality honey for both large distributor and consumer channels and remains a family owned and operated apiary. Adee’s production efforts extend from the Midwest to the Pacific and include part of the Southern U.S. as well. They are now providing pollination services to fruit and nut growers in California. Bret Adee will speak to Field Day attendees with Drs. Jon Lundgren and Chrissy Mogren (ARS) on the Value of Including Pollinator Friendly Crops.

And, finally, Paul Johnson, Extension Weed Science Coordinator at South Dakota State University, will speak with Dr. Randy Anderson (ARS) about Managing Weed Resistance and alternative practices that can be used to control weeds within production systems.

We hope that you will be able to join us on June 16. Again, tour registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with the walking tour beginning at 10:00. There will be golf cart transportation available for anyone with mobility difficulties.
