Summary
[edit]DescriptionJulius and Catherine White House, Gilman Street, Mansion Hill, Madison, WI - 52752410529.jpg |
English: Built in 1856, this Italianate residence at 114 West Gilman Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was built for Catherine and Julius White, a businessman who served in the Union Army at the rank of general (see the Property Record online). From 1859 to 1868 it was home to Ezra Slocum Carr, a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin. John Muir was a frequent guest at the house during these years. A later resident was the businessman Joseph W. Hobbins, who had the house modified in 1885 with the addition of the present front porch, vestibule, and a rear service ell with a mansard roof.
The house features a sandstone exterior, low-slope hipped roof with a cornice featuring dentils and paired brackets, windows with stone headers and sills, replacement one-over-one windows, a front door with a decorative surround featuring pilasters and a cornice, a front porch with square columns, a low-slope roof, cornice with dentils, and an enclosed sun porch with casement windows at the end, a series of various rear wing additions, and a concrete covered base. The house is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. |
