Jules Adler, également appelé « le peintre des humbles » est connu pour ses représentations naturalistes du monde ouvrier et de sa misère.
Cette manifestation signe la fin d'un important mouvement de grève commencé en mai 1899 dans les usines Schneider du Creusot. Les revendications portaient notamment sur la reconnaissance du syndicat CGT, la liberté de conscience et la suppression de la police occulte.
L'artiste ayant personnellement assisté à ce défilé, tous les éléments constitutifs du tableau sont empruntés à la réalité : le paysage marqué à droite par les chevalets des mines Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul, les manifestants en nombre, les drapeaux tricolores et les rameaux pacifiques ainsi que la présence des femmes et des enfants portant des tambours.
Dans cette œuvre, véritable icône du monde ouvrier, Adler peint la condition des travailleurs comme un modèle de fraternité malgré la dureté du métier et choisit notamment de mettre en valeur, au premier plan, les mains fraternellement serrées.
