Description

Christmas in Norway The last window in our Christmas calendar is open, and we find a beautiful testimony of Christmas traditions from as early as 1866. Pen drawing from “Illustrert Nyhetsblad” (Illustrated news magazine) 1866, from the private archive of Paul Botten-Hansen.

Botten-Hansen (1824-1869) was a Norwegian bibliographer and literary. He was born in Gudbrandsdalen and grew up poor. In 1847 he started studying. From 1856 he was an assistant in the National Archives. Botten-Hansen became assistant professor at the University Library in 1860. He edited the magazine “Andhrimner” in 1851 together with Henrik Ibsen and Aasmund Olavsson Vinje, and then from 1851 to 1856 “Illustrert Nyhetsblad”.
