Summary
[edit]DescriptionJuist schule am meer ahrends 1929.png |
English: Computer graphics based on a manual drawing from 1929 of Berlin-based architect Bruno Ahrends (1878–1948) for a building complex containing an auditorium with gallery for Schule am Meer, a progressive private school on the island of Juist in Germany which was founded by Martin Luserke (1880–1968) in 1925. The graphics is very similar to the original but not identical. The buildings marked in black were existent, the buildings marked in red were planned. The drawing's legend in capitals is identical to Ahrend's original. From 1930 to 1931 only building 2 on the upper right was erected and served as a multifunctional hall for theater and sports. It also contained large rooms for drawing and music classes, the headmaster's study, lockers, showers, toilets and central heating room. The costs of building 2 added up to 120,000 Reichsmark. It was the largest ferroconcrete building of East Frisia at that time. It was used for the pupils role playing in the tradition of William Shakespeare. The stage was open to all sides. The usual separation from the auditorium was dispensed. The actors were able to include the auditorium as well as the whole hall into their play. In 1932 the Autumn Cantata by Eduard Zuckmayer (1890–1972) had its debut performance in this building before the school's orchestra during school holidays went on tour throughout Germany's professional stages like in Berlin and Stuttgart. The other red marked buildings were not erected since the school's foundation on account of Great Depression was not able to raise more funds. Due to the Nazi Gleichschaltung the school closed in 1934. About one third of the school's pupils and the teachers were of Jewish decent. |
