Summary
[edit]DescriptionJuedischer Friedhof Wankheim+Tuebingen 14.jpg |
English: The enclosed Jewish cemetery Wankheim (1789-1941) is situated at a woodland edge outside the community Wankheim and ca. 3,6 km from center Tübingen. The last gravestone is that for Albert Schäfer, who was deported to KZ Dachau after the November events of the Kristallnacht. His death was in consequence of the treatment there. In 1880 the Jewish community of Tübingen and Reutlingen took over the cemetery. While old gravestones are simple sandstone with Hebrew typeface, newer steles are in Latin showing prosperity and assimilation to their Christian environment. The cemetery was heavily vandalized in 1939, yet again in 1950, 1986 an on New Years Eve 1990. A huge memorial stone, placed by the holocaust survivor Victor Marx in 1949, reminded of the 14 Tübingen victims, who were murdered by Nazis; amongst them his mother Blanda, his wife Marga and his eight years old daughter Ruth. |
