Kirkwall Cathedral. Choir looking east. interest. It was originally built by Earl Eognvald in 1138, and dedi-cated to his uncle Earl Magnus, Avho was slain in Egilsay in 1116, andafterwards canonized. The building is small, but so beautifully pro-portioned that it creates in the mind a false impression of size. It is218 feet in length, and measures across aisles and nave 45 feet. Its PROCEEDINGS. 289 narrowness lends to its appearance of height. It measures 89 feet acrossthe transepts, and has a triforum and clerestory for its whole length oneach side, as well as round the transepts.
