PROCEEDINGS. 291 tower. The clioir was lengthened by Bishop Stewart in the beginningof tlie sixteenth century by three bays. Tlie probability is that beforethat time the choir terminated in a semicircular apse. The junction ofthe old and new is well shown in the broad pillars, third from the centralpiers, in one of which, on the north side, relics supposed to be those ofSt. Magnus are preserved ; a specially driven stone on the cast end ofthe pillar marks the spot. The three bays on the west end of the navewere added in the end of the sixteenth century by Bishop Eeid, and itmay be that the former west front was re-erected in its present position
