Figure 2.—Flexion of joint made possible. Oct., 1920. Journal of the Medical Society of New Jersey. 339 Case 3. Figures 1 and 2.—Ankylosed leftknee (as result of infection following severeinjury) existing over a period of two years, patient only being able to walk about withcrutches. Operation during 1916. Skilled la-borer, resumed his usual occupation fivemonths after operation and continues to fill hisposition up to the present time when he isearning $6 a day.
Text Appearing After Image:
Figure 1.—Alignment attained. DISCUSSION. Dr. Sidney A. Twinch, Newark: I think Dr.Sexsmith is quite right in refusing to put anyforeign substance into the joints, what we needis autoginous substance only. When we putextention on the joints, of the knee or the hip,it is very important to use sufficient weight, forinstance five pounds on the knee joint is usu-ally insufficient, speaking generally, most adultknees require ten to fifteen pounds and adulthipslS pounds to 2 8 to 3 0 pounds. I have nothad any practical experience with this par-ticular operation because after doing it sixtimes on the cadava I decided that there wasnot sufficient tissue left to maintain the sta-bility of the joints, and therefore decided toleave stiff knee joints alone. Dr. Sexsmith hadmore courage and as he says, he to also fearedthe operations that the joints would lack sta-bility but that after a period of four monthsthe joints seemed to tighten up and the beauti-ful results obtained we are seeing today.
