OnNovember 26, 1909, the combined vaginaland abdominal operation was performed,removing uterus, tubes and ovaries. Un-der constant irrigation, the mass projectingfrom the cervix was first extirpated and thecanal closed with mattress sutures to pre- April, 1910 Journal of the Medical Society of New Jersey. 557 vent the escape of septic matter. a condition almost akin to bulimia, whichnecessitated supplementing the usual post-operative diet. On the twentieth day a small crop ofpustules developed over the abdomen fromwhich pure cultures of the staphylococcuspyogenes albus were obtained. A few in-jections of staphylococcus vaccine caused arapid disappearance of the furuncles. Onthe twenty-second day the blood showed amarked improvement: Hemoglobin, 60 percent; red cells, 3,112,000. A still further improvement was notedon the thirty-third day: Hemoglobin, 65 percent.; red cells, 3,230,000. She was nowup and about, playing with the other chil-dren, bright, happy and cheerful. The transformation was almost miracu- lous, considering the malignant nature andduration of the disease. The accompany-ing picture speaks for itself and is in nosense flattering.
