Much of the ex-pense was caused by the renovation of theNurses Home, the enlargement of the DaisyWard for children and the increase in the workdone, as shown by the following summary ofthe year, culled from the report: The greatest encouragement, however, isfound in the amount and character of the workdone. The past year has been far and away thegreatest in the history of the hospital. There have been 6,949 patients treated inall departments, as against 6,432 for the yearof 1908, a gain of 517. There have been 2,218 patients in the hos-pital proper, as against 1,87? last year. There have been 1,924 in the eye, ear, noseand throat department, as against 1,704 in 1908. There have been 2,807 in other dispensary de-partments, as against 2,855 m I9°8- This very large increase in the amount of Journal of the Medical Society of New Jersey.

The receipts have been $51,850, as against$49,709 in 1908. This is all the more gratifying,as none of this is because of some special effort.There was no carnival, no tag day. as in1908. * * * The expenditures have been, in round fig-ures, $12,000 more than the receipts. Nearly$6,000 has been expended in necessary renairsand improvements. This, with a deficiency carried over fromthe preceding year, makes the current expensedeficiency about $26,000. This sobering factshould not discourage us. It should only stim-ulate us to renewed and increased effort. The connection between the efficiency of theTraining School for Nurses and the work of thehospital is close and vital. * * * There are 28 pupil nurses in the school and6 probationers—a total of 34.
