ut it.Mr. Gore had made it easy to all using his Index to get at the stores oflearning and useful compilation in the Societys volumes. Mr. Arunachalam inquired whether it was competent for the Society,in view of Rule 1, which defined its objects, to pass the motion.Undoubtedly Mr. Gore had rendered valuable service to the Society,but the point upon which he wished the ruling of the Chair dependedentirely on the interpretation of the Rule referred to. The Hon. Mr. Swettenham, in reply, pointed out that the motionwas strictly within Rule 1. Mr. Gore had rendered distinguished servicesto the Society of the kind contemplated in Rules 7 and 9, and theywere calculated to promote the objects enumerated under Rule 1. His Excellency the Governor had no hesitation in ruling that themotion was in order, and had much pleasure in putting it beforethe Meeting. The motion was carried with acclamation, and Mr. Gorewas elected an Honorary Life Member. 3. The following Paper was read by the Author :—

NO. 45.-1894.) THE MUSIC OP CEYLON. THE MUSIC OF CEYLON. By Mr. C. M. Fernando, b.a., ll.b.cantab., Advocate. Introductory. Nearly forty years ago Mr. Louis Nell wrote a Paper, which,was read before this Society, by way of an introduction to aninvestigation of Sinhalese music. This I believe to be theonly attempt that has yet been made to inquire into themusic of Ceylon.* My endeavour is in this and subsequentPapers to do what I can to elucidate a subject which is yetan unexplored region to those interested in Ceylon and itspeople. It is my purpose to commence with observationson the music of the Mechanics, or the Ceylon Portuguese, tobe followed by Papers dealing with the vocal music now invogue among the Sinhalese : their sacred music, the descrip-tion and use of Sinhalese musical instruments, and thecultivation of music as a fine art among the ancient Sinhalese.
