Burma, that were observed coupledat the end of March. Evans and I obtained gravid females inRangoon in July and August, one specimen in July showing butlittle enlargement of the ovarian follicles. Mr. Foulkes told mesome 3^ears ago of a pair reported coupled in June at Rajamundry. The act of mating has been witnessed by Colonel Dawson andMr. H. Hampton to whom I am indebted for the following details.In Trivandrum the pair remained coupled from 11 a. m, uiuti4-20 p.m. on the 17th of January. In Mr. Hamptons vivarnlcoitus lasted intermittently for three days. He observed that thmpair nodded their heads continually, and their bodies quiveredeThey did not take the slightest notice of anybody in front of their,cage. They did not expand their hoods, neither did they wrapthemselves around one another. Each turned the vent upwardsand sideways to effect engagement. Period of gestation.—The cobra is known to be oviparous, and theperiod of gestation is accurately known in Colonel Dawsons case.

A POPULAR TREATISE ON THE COMMON INDIAN SNAKES. 551 Sixty-two days after coitus, i.e., on the 20th of March, eight eggswere deposited, the first at 8 a.m., six more almost immediately,and then after the lapse of half an hour the last. In Mr. Hamptonscase the mating was observed towards the end of March, and eggswere not deposited until the middle of j^.ugust, nearly 5 months. Season of JEgg-laying.—The usual month for the deposition ofeggs is May. All the eight cobras that have laid eggs at ParelLaboratory did so in that month. Nicholson, too, says that aboutBangalore they are laid in May and early June. Mr. Phipsonremarked that eggs are laid in the rains, and Fayrer, too, says thathis snakemen told him that about Bengal they laid eggs in therains. Two eggs sent to me from our Societys collection weredeposited in June. Wall (A. J.) mentions eggs laid in Jtily, andHamptons eggs were laid in the middle of August at Mogok.
