esfrom the period of its falling from the tree before the nut begins togerminate. Button, hoM^ever, says, that it germinates four or fivemonths after falling from the tree, and sometimes even before.Thiselton-Dyer gives the following description: The germination morphologically is of an ordinary monocotyledonous type. Theapex of the cotyledon remains immersed in the endosperm anddevelops into a vast suctorial organ, while its petiole, which is aboutan inch in diameter, emerges from the nut carrying with it theplumule and radicle . According to Button, the petiole entersthe ground to the depth of about one or two feet, then continuesunderground nearly parallel to the surface for a distance of four, five, six feet, sometimes more. A note of General Gordons isthat it comes to sprout out of the ground twelve feet from nut.Mr. Button subsequently informed me that it runs in the ground, 1 Eiecollections of a happy life, II, 289.- Hobson-Jobson, 178. Fauvel draws the attention to an interesting fact which came tohis notice through Mr. R. Dupont, Director of the Botanic Stationof the Se3chelles. On examining a number of fruits one will discover that theyshow a distinct dimorphism (cf. fig. 28). Those which have a deepsinus in the middle of the two lobes (which gives them a nasty^appearance) are said to be female by the natives of the Seychelles, whilst those with two parallel lobes and not having a sinus arecalled male. The former are supposed to produce female trees, thelatter male.* J. Stanley Gardiner of the Exploring Mission Sealark, examinedover 300 nuts and found that both kinds of fruit are of about thesame number.
