The surface and ele-vated lines carry more than 3,000,000 passengers daily.There are at the present time 04 miles of subway, which isused entirely for commercial purposes. The total popula-tion at the present time is something over 2,700,000. Chicago may be said to be the convention city of theUnited States. 610 conventions with an attendance of520,000 delegates were held in 1917. From 1906 to 1917 in-clusive there were 4317 conventions with an attendance of3,994,000 delegates. The railroad facilities are one of theprincipal features contributing to Chicago as a conventioncity. There are at the present time 38 railroads terminatingin Chicago, representing over 100,000 miles of railway orforty per cent of the railway mileage of the United States.
