Hampton, Va., Jan 7th 1897
Dear Miss Longfellow,
I am very glad to assign as your Indian boy a young Sioux from South Dakota, Henry Tatiyopa.
His father is a very fine man, one of Bishop Hare’s native helpers. I remember seeing the little church of which he had charge when I was on the Crow Creek Reserve in '89 & visiting their home near Grace Mission
Henry is a bright and interesting boy and we hope he will grow up to be a [p. 2] useful man like his father -
We have very interesting letters from Annie Dawson It seems to be a winter of blizzards out on the plains but I trust she & her friend got safely through this last one, which the papers report, as they did through the first of which Annie sent us a graphic account.
Henry's class wrote their letters the last of November in pencil & then copied them in ink later. Then came Christmas & a very busy hurried time
Please excuse that his news is rather stale. I hope you will speedily hear from him again as he was much delighted with his Christ-[p. 3] mas gift which you so kindly sent.
With many thanks
Yours sincerely,
J.E. Richards
